The media revolution continues

The 14th Pan African Media Research Organisation (PAMRO) and All Africa Media Research Conference took place last week from 26-29 August 2012 in Uganda. Carole Kimutai was there to cover what was discussed.

Day 1 dealt with ways of measuring media audiences, while Day 2 included discussions on the future of marketing in Africa and the final day included a session that explored ways to measure ROI on social media. Judging by the what came out of the discussions, there will definitely be some seismic shifts in media and news consumption.

I was fortunate enough to attend the second annual Mobile Entertainment Africa which took place in Cape Town from 29-30 August. Some very interesting topics were discussed and I can definitely say that the 'mobile revolution' has arrived. See the hashtag #MEA2012, to find out what went down.

In other news this week: MTN Nigeria tightens security in an effort to protect subscribers against mobile fraud; U Film It launches a video contest with the theme 'Peace Through The Screen' which aims on helping to spread the word of peace; in Zimbabwe, the shift from analogue to digital broadcasting is on the go, and the inaugural Forbes Africa AdAwards, which aims to celebrate the excellence of agency networks and individuals across the continent, has extended it's deadline for nominations to the 14 September 2012.

Have a great week!

The hidden cost of creativity
[Vanita 'Bezi Phiri] I've been exposed to a myriad of advertising campaigns that are inspiring in terms of creativity, but essentially poor in selling the product they're advertising. It explains why ad agencies lose accounts that have won them prestigious awards. A lot of ads may get the audience's attention, and perhaps even entertain them, yet they fail to drive them as consumers: the worst example being clever ads whose products the audience forgets. Namibian billboards - being better
[Tatenda Chiweshe] 90% of success is just 'pitching up'. Be there and you will be relevant, right? Not in Namibia. The South Africans seem to have taken a rather arrogant view.
