Bizcommunity turns 11!

Bizcommunity.com would never be where it is today without the loyal support of our communities. During the month of August, Bizcommunity celebrates 11 years since our very first newsletter was sent out in 2001. Come and join in the fun and celebrate with us, wherever you might be in Africa.

Since its inception in 2001, Bizcommunity has expanded from a single marketing and media portal with a South Africa focus (and then extending into Africa) to a total of 35 industry-specific portals, each with various categories of defined interest.

Just because it's our birthday, we're running two competitions and giving away awesome prizes, namely: a Big Boy Scooter, R20 000 in cash and Apple products.

To win these prizes:
  1. Go to our Facebook Page and leave us a message or take a picture of yourself and post to our Facebook wall. Best messages and photos win prizes.
  2. Go to Springleap for the Biz Bang t-shirt design competition and stand a chance to win your share of R20 000 for the best design.

Over the past 11 years, Bizcommunity has racked up a few interesting and impressive site statistics, here they are:
  • Over 300 000 subscribers to the Bizcommunity newsletters
  • Over 135 million newsletters sent since 2001
  • Over 130 000 job ads posted since 2001
  • If Bizcommunity were to be made into a book, it would be rather hefty - having more than 270 000 pages.
  • Such a book would be about 2.7m thick and weigh about 1 200kg.
  • Bizcommunity is made up of 330 000 lines of code. Stretched out, the code would reach 34km.

We would love to hear from you what Bizcommunity.com has meant to you over the years, so Tweet us and use #happybiz11

Cheers to many more years of Bizcommunity!
Evan-Lee Courie (@evan1985)

Kenya's retailers sound alarm over increased pilferage
[Carole Kimutai: @CaroleKimutai] If you are a shopper in Nairobi and you walk into Nakumatt Lifestyle, you will notice something - baby milk is stored in a glass cabinet, under lock and key. That key is in the custody of one employee. These security measures by Nakumatt and other retail outlets are as a result of increased cases of operational losses occasioned by shoplifting and general theft. The losses (shrinkage) industry players fear could be a case of an emerging organised pilferage ring targeting local supermarkets. Read more >>

It is not surprising therefore that the Index has remained the same this month, as consumer confidence remains as stagnant as the economy." Read more >>
