2012 CNN MultiChoice African Journalists named

Tom Mboya and Evanson Nyaga were named the overall winners of the 2012 CNN MultiChoice African Journalist of the Year at this year's awards ceremony on Saturday evening, 21 July 2012. The pair from Kenya, won the award for their work 'African Tribe in India', which aired on Citizen TV, and were chosen from among 1 799 entries from 42 nations across the African continent. Their work tells the story of an African tribe in India, long forgotten and little known about, based in Karnataka, Southern India. Mboya and Evanson, who were among 34 finalists for the top prize, also won the Television Features Award.

The ceremony also recognised Enenche Akogwu and Zakariya Isa as this year's recipients of the Free Press Africa Award, for their work in Nigeria. Zakariya, a cameraman for the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), was killed in October 2011, and Enenche, a news reporter with Channels Television, was shot and killed while covering the Kano bomb blast earlier this year.

Well done to all the other winners in the individual competition categories!

With just over a month to go, the 16th Highway Africa Conference is set to take place from 9-11 September at Rhodes University in South Africa, nominations for the 12th edition of the Highway Africa New Media Awards is now open. The closing date for nominations is 24 August 2012 - so start getting your entries in!

On Friday, 20 July 2012, Forbes Africa opened nominations for the inaugural Forbes Africa AdAwards which will pay tribute to the stars in the advertising industry across Africa.

Airtel, the telecommunications company with operations across 16 countries in Africa, has officially launched its 3.75G platform in Malawi and Madagascar. The improved technology is expected to enhance multimedia functionality, high speed mobile broadband and internet access - allowing users to make video calls, watch live TV, send and receive emails and download music from the devices.
