New research puts spotlight on how - and why - ads work

Researchers at the University of Los Angeles in the US have found that when it comes to which ads are winners your brain knows better than you do. Neuroscientists at the university used brain data to predict how large populations will respond to advertisements.

It's sad, but true, that one of the world's most dangerous professions is journalism. So, in an effort to help members of the profession protect themselves and their sources, the Committee to Protect Journalists has launched it's Journalist Security Guide. It's a nuts-and-bolts guide on how to be safer.

Malawian journalists reckon that they often go out on a limb on behalf of NGOs in that country, so they find it somewhat off-putting when those same NGOs don't support journalists when the latter are experiencing oppression and persecution, writes Gregory Gondwe.

Over in West Africa, Vladimir Duthiers has been appointed as the new CNN correspondent in Lagos. Duthiers will take on the role of CNN international correspondent based in Lagos, Nigeria and will join CNN's contingent of Africa-based correspondents across the continent, as the network reaffirms its commitment to Nigeria.

To conclude, why not visit the southern tip of Africa... namely, Cape Town. Yes' it's that time again - start planning that Loeries trip. The 34th Annual Loerie Awards, which takes place in Cape Town from 15-23 September 2012, have opened for ticket sales, accommodation and car hire.

So what are you waiting for? Start planning your trip... now!
