Time for Design Indaba 2012

It's that time again when thousands of the world's brightest talents from across various creative industries descend on Cape Town, South Africa, for the annual Design Indaba Conference and Expo. The conference takes place from Wednesday 29 February until Friday 2 March 2012 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre and the expo (which is open to the general public) takes place 2-4 March. To find out what's going down, check out our Design Indaba special section; follow live updates on our Twitterfall; and read Bizcommunity contributor Herman Manson's breakdown of what to expect at this year's gathering.

While all things creative takes place at Design Indaba this week, a public search to uncover new talents, voices and ideas the world needs to hear has come to the continent. Themed "The Young, The Wise, The Undiscovered", applications to audition for TED 2013 are now open in South Africa and Kenya and applications in Tunisia will open up on 29 February.

In other news: a collaboration on a film project between South African James Tayler and Kenyan Sarah Muhoho, has received international acclaim at the Berlinale International Film Festival's Talent Campus for its innovative and distinctive African storyline. The film, The Boda Boda Thieves, tells the East African tale of a poverty-stricken family from Kampala, Uganda, that supports themselves through meagre earnings driving a motorcycle taxi, also known as a "boda-boda". Africa in Motion, an African film festival which takes place in Edinburgh, UK has called on film submissions for the 2012 edition, which takes place October-November. The theme is 'Modern Africa'.

Following the launch of of the 3.75G platform in Zambia in January this year, Airtel has now launched the 3.75G services in Kenya. The improved technology will enhance multimedia functionality, high speed mobile broadband and internet access, allowing users to make video calls, watch live TV, send and receive emails and download music from the devices.

Tatenda Chiweshe gives us insight into the West African outdoor media landscape and, according to a new media report by Ipsos-Synovate, mobile operator MTN has maintained its lead as top advertiser in Uganda in 2011. The report reveals that MTN spent about Shs32 billion on advertising in 2011.

Here's to another great week!

One of the main beneficiaries on an election are usually the printers. Unlike previous years where they would expect to be laughing all the way to the bank, this year, they could be crying as they run away from banks - literally. Read more >>

A life worth selling your soul
[Johann Smith] The word alternative has become misleading and common. Nowadays, if you want to be alternative, your choices are limited between becoming a farmer, a Christian fundamentalist or staying a virgin. If we could go back, to '69 or '76, before the word was coined - and perhaps even further, to a time, when rock 'n' roll came without sex and drugs, and paused at the second Chuck Berry discovered electricity, we would know why we're here. Yesterday's conservative society shouldn't have warned us about the devil, but of boredom instead. Read more >>
