Bizcommunity.com unveils new face

After months of behind-the-scenes activity, we're thrilled to unveil a revamped Bizcommunity.com, featuring a host of new features - from an expanded set of self promotional tools - such as personal profiles appearing on the front page of the websites as well as in the newsletter, to the ability to find, follow, subscribe and share with your favourite industry personalities and opinion leaders.

Anton Hammerl believed dead; much sorrow, anger
South African photographer Anton Hammerl, who'd been missing in Libya since 5 April 2011, is presumed dead. According to eyewitnesses, Hammerl was shot on that day by Gaddafi's forces in an extremely remote location in the Libyan desert and his injuries were such that he could not have survived without medical attention. Uganda president publicly criticises the press
NEW YORK: The Committee to Protect Journalists condemns President Yoweri Museveni for publically criticising local and foreign media outlets. Museveni expressed anger over the outlets' coverage of protests by the opposition over rising fuel prices. In a letter published Tuesday, 17 May 2011, in the state-owned daily New Vision, Museveni accused Al-Jazeera, the BBC, the Kenyan broadcaster NTV, and the local independent Daily Monitor of being supporters of recent opposition protests and "enemies of Uganda's recovery." Africa takes two awards at the EMEA Sabre Awards
With four finalists in the 2011 EMEA SABRE Awards, Africa walked away with two prizes. The winners were announced late last week at the Prague Castle in the Czech Republic. The Africa in Motion website has been experiencing serious problems after being attacked by malware; this caused problems with the server and made it inaccessible. AiM is currently calling for submissions for the festival this year. Africa seeks world class electronic media industry
[Walter Wafula] Players in Africa's broadcasting and film industry are set to meet in Kenya this July to discuss how to realise a competitive and modern electronic media industry on the continent. African mobile ad impressions sees growth in 2011 - InMobi
JOHANNESBURG: Independent mobile advertising network InMobi, on tuesday, 17 May 2011, released its latest Africa Regional Insights. These provide a snapshot of mobile advertising trends on the continent between December 2010 and March 2011. Data from the report shows that InMobi now serves over 3.6 billion impressions a month in Africa and that these mobile ad impressions have grown consistently by 3% during the period. Read more >>

MALAWI
EU injects €161 million into Malawi's ailing economy
[Gregory Gondwe] The European Union, mid last week, announced the approval of €161 million (approximately MWK 34 billion) that will go towards a package of six strategic programmes. This assistance is in line with Malawi's 2010 Annual Action Programme under the 10th European Development Fund (EDF). About €12 million (approximately MKW 2.8 billion) of this money will go towards a new Capacity Building Programme for Trade and Private Sector Development. Read more >>

Stanbic Bank Botswana signs Morupule debt financing agreement
The Standard Bank Group, through its Corporate and Investment Banking Division, has acted as lead arranger for the Morupule Expansion project. The signing ceremony was held on 20 May 2011 in Palapye, Botswana. The P1.2 billion-loan raised will be part of the contribution in bank and shareholder loans for the P1.7 billion required to expand output at the coal mine. Read more >>
