Africa's top journalists honoured

South African Sam Rogers has been awarded the top prize at this year's CNN MultiChoice African Journalist 2010 Awards ceremony. The awards are a truly representative of the continent, with shortlisted entries and winners coming from all around the continent. The awards celebrate the achievements of the members of the continent's "Fifth Estate" for whom that very same continent is often a place of great danger. Indicative of this is the tribute paid to nine journalists who paid the ultimate price to bring the news of what's happening to the public. It is clear, however, that while we pay tribute to them, we can rest assured that given the quality of the entries into the CNN MultiChoice African Journalist 2010 Awards, those who gave their lives did not die in vain. So, we salute them, and we also salute those who continue to work to bring the news and the truth to public attention. Often they do so under very trying conditions - and sometimes at the risk of their very lives.
