US puts new spam law into practice
Spammers could be headed for prison for the first time after US authorities filed criminal charges under a new law aimed at curbing unwanted email advertising, officials have said. The charges grew out of an investigation by the Federal Trade Commission and prosecutors in Detroit, Michigan, into a group responsible for flooding the internet with nearly half a million emails for what officials called "fraudulent" herbal diet aids and patches. This case marks the US's first criminal prosecution under the Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing (CAN-SPAM) Act, which went into effect on January 1, 2004.
