Elephant wins Cannes Palme d'Or

American director Gus van Sant, known for his work on films like Good Will Hunting and My Own Private Idaho, has won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes movie festival for Elephant, a documentary-style auteur film dealing with problem of violence in the US. Van Sant also picked up the prize for Best Director.
