South Africa documentary nominated for Emmys
The documentary 'Miners Shot Down', directed by Rehad Desai, has scored an International Emmy Award nomination in the Best Documentary category.
The film, which was recently released on VIDI, exposes the truth behind the Marikana mineworkers strike and the subsequent massacre. Using viewpoint of the miners, it follows the strike from day one, showing the courageous but isolated fight waged by a group of low paid workers against the combined forces of the mining company, Lonmin, the ANC government and their allies in the National Union of Mineworkers. Six days after the strike began, the police used live ammunition to brutally suppress the workers, killing 34 and injuring many more. What emerges is collusion at the top, spiralling violence and the country's first post-colonial massacre.
Winners will be announced at a black-tie ceremony on 23 November 2015 at the Hilton New York Hotel.
