Icasa releases report on tariff notifications
The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) has released its report on the South African mobile operators' tariff notifications submitted. The report is an analysis of the submitted tariff notifications that highlight the different tariff plans - prices and product offerings - which were filed and/or existed in the market during the period of 1 July-31 December 2017.
The communications authority conducted the report to ensure that there is retail tariff transparency, which could potentially encourage competition as it is likely to minimise pricing and product information asymmetries in the sector. Icasa also conducted a benchmarking study of data prices within the Southern African Development Communities (SADC) and BRICS countries to compare billing on various packages offered.
