SA's oldest LGBTQI+ mag turns 25
South Africa's longest-running LGBTQI+ magazine, Gay Pages, is celebrating the 25 years since it first launched. Over the years, the magazine has witnessed many landmarks, such as the decriminalisation of homosexuality and the institution of same-sex marriage.
Rubin van Niekerk founded Africa's first gay business association in 1992, named The Family Business, that soon needed to have a newsletter. This consisted of a few Olivetti hand-typed pages handed to members.
The newsletter then became a magazine - The Family Business Directory. After publishing under the name once, the magazine changed its name to Gay Pages.
