Nigerian local production ban draws criticism in entertainment sector
The Nigerian federal government's proposal to halt the production of Nigerian music videos, outside of the country, has garnered criticism amongst those in the country's entertainment industry. The Nigerian information and culture minister Lai Mohammed had announced the government's intention to prioritise local production during a recent visit to the headquarters of the Copyright Society of Nigeria in Lagos.
Mohammed had indicated that the government's decision was steered by international production's effects on the empowerment of local practitioners in the industry, the development of the sector, and the country's economy in general.
Local musicians have expressed criticism of the policy, saying that it will hinder global competitiveness of the music industry and would do little in benefitting the industry.
