Sanef to mark Black Wednesday with third annual gala dinner
The South African National Editors' Forum (Sanef) will host its annual Black Wednesday Gala Dinner at the Emoyeni venue in Parktown, Johannesburg on 18 October 2019. The gala dinner is held in commemoration of Black Wednesday and celebration of the hard-won media freedom that followed.
South African Reserve Bank deputy governor Kuben Naidoo, who also serves as the head of the newly established Prudential Authority, will deliver this year's keynote address. On 19 October 1977, then-minister of justice Jimmy Kruger banned several newspapers, as well as various black consciousness and pro-democracy organisations - prominent editors and journalists were arrested, detained, assaulted, tortured.
