Not a proud record - 21 Jun 2010

Thoughts on the vuvuzela - 14 Jun 2010

[Sindy Peters, Africa editor] I've been avidly following most of the 2010 FIFA World Cup matches since kick-off last Friday and it's great to see Africa's teams holding out against some of the world's finest footballers. If you too have been glued to your seat in front of the telly, you may have noticed a distinct hum around the stadiums that sounds very similar to a swarm of bees protecting their hive. read more

Bizcommunity too is joining in the fun with the sound of a miniature vuvuzela announcing lunch-time and flags and balls showing off our soccer fever. read more

Africa, stand up for yourself! - 24 May 2010

[Sindy Peters, Africa editor] Africa is not the dumping ground for developed world e-waste and should not be treated as such. Yes, the continent is happy to make good use of hand-me-downs, but when those goods are no longer usable, they need to be recycled and it is the responsibility of the original owners to make sure these items are recycled responsibly. read more

Volcano strikes again - 17 May 2010

[Sindy Peters, Africa editor] World Cup fans planning to swarm down to South Africa for the big event had better cross their fingers, say their prayers or host a séance. That Icelandic volcano that caused chaos in international airspace just a few weeks ago has blasted up another ash cloud that forced various airports in Europe to shutdown over the weekend. read more    (1 Comment)

Do a Doodle4Google - 26 Apr 2010

[Sindy Peters, Africa editor] As football fever begins to grip Africa and the rest of the world, Google recently launched its Doodle4Google 'I love football' competition. Google doodles are variations on the official Google logo, usually involving a clever manipulation of the letters of the search engine's name. School children between the ages of four and 17 in Ghana, Kenya, South Africa as well as other countries globally are invited to participate with the chance to have one's work featured on the search engine's global home page for the whole of 11 July, the day of the 2010 FIFA World Cup final. read more

Event organisers vs. ash plume - 19 Apr 2010

[Sindy Peters, Africa editor] The 2010 Festival of Media conference kicked off this morning in Valencia, Spain, regardless of the ominous ash plume created by the Icelandic volcano that's been wreaking havoc in airspaces across Europe. I bet the organisers, when they were jotting down various worst-case scenarios, didn't see this one coming - but I guess no-one could. read more

So long to Dr Banda - 12 Apr 2010

[Sindy Peters, Africa editor] Last week Friday saw the passing of one of Africa's most prominent media veterans, Dr Aleke Kadonaphani Banda, who aided in building the foundations of some of the continent's biggest print media houses in Malawi. Dangers of the internet - 15 Mar 2010

[Sindy Peters, Africa editor] The media is a powerful tool in disseminating information, but online is even more powerful because it works at the click of a button. We send out newsletters to our thousands of subscribers loaded with information in literally minutes; once that information is sent out there's slim to none chance of retrieving it. read more

Let us hear you roar! - 8 Mar 2010

[Sindy Peters, content manager] Today, 8 March 2010, marks International Women's Day. Men may question it's celebration, crying foul that they in turn do not have a special day, but here is what I've always maintained: women have been striving for gender equality and the same human rights that their counterparts have been born with since the beginning of time. read more    (1 Comment)

Are you doing the Diski? - 1 Mar 2010

[Sindy Peters, content manager] I think we're way past the question of whether South Africa is ready to host the 2010 FIFA World Cup or not; it's evident that indeed it is, but whether it will be the biggest and best is still up for debate. Also whether South Africans will bother to leave their desks at noon tomorrow and do the Diski dance to mark the 100-day point to kick-off is still not quite certain. read more
