Escapism through reality? - 21 Sep 2009

By Sindy Peters

Escapism through reality? - Mon, 21 Sep 2009It appears the escape from our own mundane lives through reality TV has not become tired in Africa. The concept still draws viewers, and it draws them in huge numbers. Multichoice Malawi subscriptions went up by 4000 thanks to the launch of Big Brother Africa (BBA) Revolution. This is the fourth edition of the show so they must be pulling in quite a substantial sum of cash to continue producing and broadcasting.

The Survivor China finale blunder in South Africa caused quite an uproar - I'm surprised loyal addicts didn't grab their pitch forks and toyi-toyi outside the SABC headquarters until the poor bugger who messed up was handed over for retribution.

And pretty soon we will see the launch of the 2009 Face of Africa, run as a 17-part series in November 2009.

Will reality TV always remain such a draw-card for audiences? Desmond Ekeh, CEO of Synthesis Communications, doesn't seem to think so. For now, however, the intrigue remains.
