AfricaCom 2011 has come and gone - 14 Nov 2011

By Evan-Lee Courie

AfricaCom 2011, the communications conference and exhibition which took place last week, 9-10 November 2011, with a record number of attendees, has come and gone.

Furthermore, Spinlet, a music download service, launched their technology which allows music lovers to digitally ditribute music on a mobile platform; Informa Telecoms & Media, organisers of the event, also revealed that South Africa is more ready than Kenya and Egypt to embrace mobile government services; the winners of AfricaCom Awards 2011 were also announced. Follow the tweets to see what attendees had to say.

In other news, "Africa finally gets to tell its story" says Teresa Clarke, chairman and CEO of Africa.com, in an interview with Herman Manson.

In Kenya, mobile network operator yuMobile joins the Gmail SMS chat service. Learn how you can send an SMS from Gmail. Also, Canon re-enters the Kenyan market with a new business approach.

Applicants of television operating licences in Uganda finally heard their fate last week after waiting almost 3 years. After denying 30+ applications, The Malawi Communication Regulatory Authority only issued licences to president Bingu wa Mutharika.

Lastly, Bizcommunity has created a tribute page in memory of Alan McLarty, who until his death was managing director of Mindshare (the media agency formerly known as Initiative Lagos). We invite all those who knew him to add their own tributes. A memorial service will be held this Wednesday evening, 16 November, at the offices of Primedia Unlimited in Sandton, Johannesburg, South Africa.

Here's to a great week ahead!
