Africa shining - 3 Dec 2012

By Evan-Lee Courie [[@evan1985]]

As we begin to wrap up 2012, it's always good to have a positive attitude as we approach the festive season. While Africa continues to shine, there's no doubt that in the years to come, Africa will be glowing with many opportunities as the global community has its eyes on us.

This week, Dr. James Mwangi, CEO and MD of Equity Bank in Kenya, was named the Forbes Africa Person of the Year 2012. He beat the likes of Aliko Dangote, Tony Elumelu, president Joyce Banda and Stephen Saad to the title.

The online source of Nollywood films, iROKOtv celebrates one year since its launch in December 2011. iROKOtv is reported to have recorded over 800 000 registered users in eight months and has viewers tuning in from over 178 countries across the world.

Anyone can now travel virtually to Botswana via Street View on Google Maps. Street View launched in the country last week, making it the second African country to be on Street View, following South Africa.

The African News Innovation Challenge winners have been announced. An evident theme found in the somewhat 500 entries, of which 20 projects were awarded funding and technical support, was that media needs to find better ways to engage its audiences.

With these achievements, it's a clear indication that Africa isn't slowing down.

Lastly, Donna Rachelson shares some insight into the importance of team branding. She states that to create a team brand, the team needs to have a clear understanding of its target market, its core competencies, the benefits it offers and its brand personality.

Have a great week!
