248 days and counting - 5 Oct 2009By Sindy PetersFans of football worldwide, but most particularly in Africa, are counting down the days to the kick-off of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. With just 248 days to go, everything seems to be running smoothly and all systems are a-go. The 2010 FIFA World Cup Organising Committee SA and FIFA recently completed an inspection of the five newly built stadiums and the upgraded Soccer City stadium and seemed more than happy with progress all-round. The South African transport minister also sounds positive about preparations for the event after launching the 570-odd "state-of-the-art" Translux luxury buses that will be used to convey officials and fans during the World Cup. He also noted that the BRT system is now running smoothly, a month after launch. More great news surrounding the 2010 FIFA World Cup is that Rowelna Venter, a Nelson Mandela Metropolitan graduate, will take up her new position as media relations co-ordinator for the World Cup as of next month. At 24 years old this is a great opportunity for Venter and we wish her all the best during her 10-month term. During the early stages of construction and development, the question of whether South Africa would be ready for 2010 arose on numerous occasions. The answer to that question at this point in time is an emphatic yes!
