Media role for 2010 - 1 Feb 2010

By Sindy Peters, content manager

Media role for 2010 - Mon, 01 Feb 2010It seems the South African media are not about to roll over and commit to FIFA's terms and conditions for reporting on the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Three of the countries' biggest media groups have rallied together and maintain that FIFA's restrictions are "unjustifiable" and "unconstitutional". And right they are. FIFA may be able to enforce its terms of advertising but to restrict the media as it sees fit jeopardises the institutions' objectivity. While everyone is feeling optimistic and excited about hosting the World Cup and media would do well to report in this vein, they should never become mere lapdogs - it goes against all the principles of media freedom. Journalists, however, should be cautious in sensationalising a story for monetary gain, especially crime-related ones, as this is simply unacceptable. Hopefully FIFA sees the light on this one though.

African film writers, directors and producers now have an opportunity to showcase and promote their work at the inaugural Durban FilmMart. The film market forms part of the 31st Durban International Film Festival and creators are invited to submit their projects.
