The
CNN African Journalist of the Year Competition was established in August 1995 to encourage, promote and recognise excellence in African journalism. In the early nineties Edward Boateng, the then regional director of Turner Broadcasting, was travelling around the African continent on business. During his travels he became concerned about the lack of respect journalists received and he decided to try and help them gain recognition for their hard work and commitment. Find out more about the awards
here.
Now in its 18th year, the awards are still going strong and continues to recognise African journalists in various categories - from radio and television to digital and environmental journalism. Journalists who are entering this year's competition have until this Wednesday, 17 April 2013 to send in their completed entry forms and supporting material. Entries can be found online at
www.cnn.com/WORLD/africa/africanawards.
Previous winners include: Tom Mboya and Evanson Nyaga (2012), Fatuma Noor (2011) - all from Kenya and Sam Rogers (2010) from South Africa.
