And then the Olympics came to an end...

With the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games sadly coming to an end yesterday, I am nothing more than proud of Team Africa!

Our continent tallied a total of 31 Olympic medals - how amazing is that? Leading the pack with the most amount of medals are: Kenya - 11; Ethiopia - 7 and South Africa - 6, followed by Egypt, Algeria, Uganda, Botswana and Gabon also winning medals.
As I predicted, Africa walked away with more than a handful of medals. Well done to each and every team on the continent that took part in the Summer Games!

As it was reported, these Olympics would be labelled as the first 'social games', and I couldn't agree more. When I wasn't in front of the television watching avidly, I was checking the updates on Twitter. According to Memeburn, here are the 5 biggest Twitter moments of London 2012.

Olympic fever isn't over just yet, in 16 days, the Paralympic Games begin. To keep up with your respective county, check for updates on www.london2012.com. Again, good luck to each and every team taking part!

And in marketing and media related news: contributor Donna Rachelson shares some insight in Branding lessons from the Olympics; IT News Africa officially launches African Innovator magazine; a fued between MACRA and Professor Mathews Chikaonda exposes some gaps in Malawi's telecommunications industry; in Uganda, New Vision regains its top spot in cyberspace and the 15th IACC invite young journalists working in sub-Saharan Africa to take part in the conference.

Cheers to a great week!

Improve employee engagement: engage with social media
[Charles Nightingale] Numerous research studies have shown that engaged employees are the basis of a company's success and drive tangible performance results. Their contribution is particularly essential during a lengthy period of economic recession: engaged employees have a genuine intellectual and emotional sense of ownership and are willing to do whatever is needed to support the organisation's success. They take pride in doing so, and thereby acquire individual job satisfaction. Read more >>

Victoria Junction, bland new, but brilliant beds
[Brian Berkman: contributing editor, travel] When the Victoria Junction Hotel was built in 1996 it was part of one of the first New York-style loft redevelopments of industrial warehousing. The interiors were quirkily geared towards the movie industry, albeit a little verging on the theme-park. On a return visit, after many years, I was disappointed that none of the quirkiness remained following the 2011 refurbishment. In short, what was once an interesting, individual hotel now seems bland. Read more >>
