Welcome to Africa's newest state, South SudanCongratulations South Sudan on achieving independence and becoming Africa's 54th state. Celebrations took place on Saturday, 9 July at the Dr John Garang Stadium welcoming the newly-founded country. It's an exciting time for the South Sudanese with a whiff of promise in the air and a new-found hope in what the future holds. May the years to come see the country develop into a flourishing nation and see the current leadership plant the seeds to sustainable success and nurture them well. On a more frivolous note, African Fashion International's (AFI) Cape Town Fashion Week (CTFW) starts this Wednesday, 13 July. Dakar held its own fashion parade mid last week, but the models were made to strut without any music, which probably put quite a damper on the event. A government official turned up and ordered the music be turned off as there were unresolved issues concerning copyright. [Protus Onyango] JUBA: Macklina Kenyi, 33, ran away from South Sudan to avoid being raped and abducted by the rebels during the war. She has since been studying in Kenya but on 9 July 2011 she returned to Juba to witness the birth of her country. In December, once she completes her Masters studies, she will return home to help rebuild her country. South Sudan's independence was, she said, a dream come true. Read more >>

[Gregory Gondwe] The Malawi government, through the Malawi Communication Regulatory Authority (MACRA), is buying equipment that could allow it to act as 'Big Brother'. ROME: Africa's newest nation, South Sudan celebrated its independence on Saturday, 9 July 2011. The country faces many challenges in building a strong and stable economy that supports the food security and livelihoods of its population.
