NEW YORK: The Committee to Protect Journalists yesterday, 3 June 2011, called on Egypt's ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) to stop its harassment of journalists who report critically on the military. Officers and military prosecutors have censored, harassed, or otherwise intimidated numerous critical journalists since February, and particularly in recent weeks. 
NEW YORK: The Kampala Magistrate Court released online editor Timothy Kalyegira on bail on Tuesday, 1 June 2011, after the court remanded him to Luzira prison in the capital, Kampala. He is expected to return to court on June 30. 
CAPE TOWN: Carat Saracen has collaborated with South African creative agency Metropolitan Republic to handle all aspects (creative and strategy) of advertising for MTN in Uganda. Carat Saracen will handle media platforms whilst Metropolitan Republic will handle the creative side as well as client service. 
A report by mobile operator Vodacom's parent company Vodafone and the World Wide Web Foundation has cautioned against over-investing in the deployment of fixed-line fibre access networks in emerging markets and particularly rural areas, questioning the sustainability of such an approach given its expense. 
Inter Press Service (IPS) Africa will be hosting a media workshop to improve the knowledge of reporters and provide additional skills on covering water issues. Print and radio journalists from countries within the SADC region (except Madagascar) are invited to submit applications for scholarships which includes transport, accommodation and meals. 
TARIFA: The eighth African Film Festival of Tarifa, hostsed from 11-19 June 2011, will feature 140 films from 23 African countries, which will compete for eight awards. The festival will welcome over 200 African filmmakers including African directors Abderrahmane Sissako and Moustapha Alassane. It will focus on, among others, African Diaspora in Latin America, the role of cinema in recent revolutions in Tunis and Egypt, and a restrospective of Congolese cinematography.
