Malawi media loses industry stalwart

Yet another stalwart of the Malawi media industry, Edward Chisambo, passed away over the weekend; the managing editor for Blantyre Newspapers Limited succumbed to malaria and hypertension. His unfortunate death comes at a time when Malawi could use the support of all its veteran members in the fight for press freedom in the country. A member of MISA Malawi, Chisambo's career in the industry ran for almost two decades. Our condolences go out to his family, friends and colleagues. Late last year Malawi media lost Jika Nkolokosa, executive director for the Malawi Institute of Journalism (MIJ), and media legend Tony Mita.

On a happier note, congratulations to all those who made it into the final shortlist of the 2011 Diageo Africa Business Reporting Awards. Their dedication towards excellence in the profession allows Africa a voice in the international media. The winners will be announced at a gala ceremony in London on 30 June 2011. Good luck to all!

Cheers, Sindy Peters (@sindylp), Africa editor

School SMEs boost quality of education in Ghana
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] School infrastructure across Africa has, since the dawn of independence, been deteriorating at a faster pace as maintenance is almost non-existent and building of new facilities stalls. This, coupled with high teacher-pupil ratio, corruption and nepotism, lack of qualified teaching staff and basic teaching material, have pushed the African education system into the doldrums and plunged it into absolute chaos. African telcos can claim carbon credits under Nedbank Capital scheme
Although a large number of African telcos use diesel generators to power their base stations and other telecoms equipment, the "green revolution" that should see them make more use of renewable energy solutions is yet to come. The Peninsula - as good as ever
[Brian Berkman: contributing editor, travel] I remember the Peninsula All-Suite Hotel in Sea Point opening 21 years ago. It was an exciting project as half the building was an art deco beachfront block of flats while the other half was newly built in that 1980's glam style. I especially loved the low mirrored ceilings and mirrored walls that looked straight off the set of Dynasty. For me, sitting in the lobby was like being in Alexis Carrington's apartment.
