The governments of Mozambique and Zimbabwe have begun the "voluntary repatriation" of their citizens, in the wake of ongoing xenophobic violence in South Africa that police say has claimed 42 lives, displaced more than 16,000 people and led to 400 arrests.

ANC deputy president condemns “ugly, barbaric” attacks
[Louise Marsland] ANC deputy president Kgalema Motlanthe told the International Media Forum in Johannesburg this morning, Thursday, 22 May 2008, that attacks on foreign nationals over the past week was an attack on the values of our civil society in South Africa and needed to be condemned as hate crimes. He called on all South Africans to condemn these barbaric acts.
