UN lifts Sierra Leone sanctions

The United Nations Security Council lifted all remaining sanctions against Sierra Leone on Wednesday (29 September 2010). These included an arms embargo and a travel bans for rebels, which had been in place since 1997.

The UN Security Council praised Sierra Leone's government for fully re-establishing control over its territory and disarming former rebel fighters. But the UN peacekeeping mission in the country is to remain for another year, according to the BBC. More than 50,000 people are believed to have been killed in Sierra Leone's 1991-2002 civil war.
