Hachiko is a man's best friendHachiko: A Dog's Story is the American movie version of this 1930's time-honoured tale of commitment and friendship. The saying “A dog is a man's best friend' rings true in the case of Hachiko. ![]() The movie is based on a true Japanese story of a loyal Akita dog that remains faithful to his master, a Tokyo professor. Hachiko nicknamed ‘Hachi' in the film is an abandoned puppy who becomes attached to his founder, Parker Wilson (Richard Gere), a college professor whom he follows to and from the train station everyday to meet and greet him. This becomes a daily routine for ‘Hachi' who only requires the attention of his master until their lives are suddenly jilted. This is a heart-warming and touching story that shows endearment through simple gestures. There is a statue of the dog outside the Shibuya train station in Tokyo which was known to be the meeting spot and is now called the ‘Hachi Exit'.
