60th World Newspaper Congress for Cape Town

While newspapers throughout the world confront the exciting challenge of creating multi-platform news and advertising enterprises, the media in dozens of African countries still remain engaged in the struggle to finally win freedom and independence.

The 60th World Newspaper Congress, 14th World Editors Forum and Info Services Expo will be held in Cape Town, South Africa from 3 to 6 June 2007.

The World Newspaper Congress will this year take Shaping the Future of the Newspaper as its theme, reflecting the great success of WAN's major research project of the same name.

The programme will focus on the innovations, breakthroughs and opportunities that are benefitting newspapers all over the world and ensuring the future health of the industry.

The theme of the Editors Forum is Quality Journalism in the Digital Age. The conference will focus on what newspapers are doing to leverage one of their greatest advantages - valuable, credible journalism - into success on all platforms, print and digital. The conference will look at such topics as newsroom integration, social networking and younger readers, trends in free newspapers, shrinking newsrooms, and much more.

The Congress will also host the three annual WAN round tables on Press Freedom, Digital Media, and Young Readers, which will respectively focus on press freedom in Africa as the key to good governance and development, on maximising the digital potential of the newspaper, and on the winning strategies for engaging a new generation.

More than 1500 publishers, chief editors, managing directors, CEOs and other senior newspaper executives from 90 countries, including Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Oman, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are expected at the events which will be held for the first time ever in Africa.

There is no specific cut-off date for registrations, which the organizers are accepting up the beginning of June. For full conference information, including the programs and registration details, go to the WAN website
