    CNN launches paid iPhone application

WASHINGTON: US cable television news network CNN launched a news application for the Apple iPhone, joining other media organisations seeking to make money from mobile devices.

The CNN iPhone App, which costs US$1.99 and includes advertising, features news headlines and stories, photos and live breaking news video.

It is available through Apple's App Store and can also run on the iPod Touch.

The CNN App allows for personalisation of weather, traffic and news and lets iPhone 3GS users send their own photos and videos to iReport.com, a CNN outlet for user-generated content.

Users can also access an archive of video clips in a variety of categories.

CNN is the latest news outlet to offer a news application for smartphones.

Other US media organisations offering news applications for mobile devices include the Associated Press, Bloomberg and The New York Times.

Agence France-Presse recently launched AFP Mobile News for BlackBerry, a news application which costs US$2.99 but is available for free for one month as part of a promotion through Blackberry App World.

The Wall Street Journal announced earlier this month that it will begin charging in October for access to the newspaper on the Blackberry and iPhone.

The Journal said a mobile-only subscription will cost two dollars a week while a mobile subscription combined with either a print Journal or WSJ.com subscription will be one dollar a week.

Subscribers to both the print and online editions of the Journal will receive free access to the WSJ Mobile Reader application.
