Messaging remains driver behind mobile data
Messaging will remain the driver behind mobile data revenues for years to come, yielding an anticipated US$224 billion by 2013, which amounts to 60% of combined non-voice revenues, according to a new forecast by market analysis firm Portio Research.
Portio says messaging traffic volume and revenues will remain a cash cow for operators even in the face of continued economic turmoil.
While media-rich MMS and enterprise-based mobile email and youth conscious mobile IM, will generate carrier income, short message service (SMS) will continue to lead due to its low cost, relative ease of use and interoperability across all networks.
