Here are four of those women who are making waves in Africa and across the world.
Isis Nyongo (Kenya)
A leader in mobile advertising in Africa, Nyongo has worked at companies such as MTV, Google, InMobi and more. Currently she's a Principal at Asphalt & Ink, a women-run strategic advisory firm in Kenya, as well as being the Founder and CEO of Mums Village, a website designed to help mothers in Africa.
She's been selected as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum as well as one of "Africa's top 20 youngest power women" by Forbes.
Folake Folarin-Coker (Nigeria)
Folarin-Coker started the fashion label Tiffany Amber in Nigeria in 1998. Almost 20 years later, Folarin-Coker has been selected as one of "Top 20 Youngest Power African Women" in Africa by Forbes, and has one of the most iconic and award-winning brands in the country. She's had shows in New York and won the Designer of the Year at African Fashion Week in Johannesburg.
Adenike Ogunlesi (Nigeria)
Ogunlesi started out from owning a tiny shop with her mother, to becoming a leader in the manufacturing of children's clothes in Nigeria. The company called Ruff 'n Tumble now has 50 employees and has expanded across Nigeria, exporting clothes in West Africa.
Ory Okolloh (Kenya)
Activist, blogger and lawyer, Okolloh co-founded a crowd sourcing site called Ushahidi (Swahili for "witness") in 2007, a platform that collects eye-witness accounts of violence and corruption in Kenya.
Okolloh is the Director of Investments for Omidyar Networks, and was also the policy manager for Google in Africa.
