Only in Africa returns for third season
The highly anticipated return of the series kicked off on Saturday, 21 July with The Last White Man Standing; where in Kenya - a white landowner kills a poacher. The subsequent trial evolves more around white landownership, the tension between the rich and the poor, than of the actual murder. A case deeply rooted in Africa's history and current composition.
In May 2006, Robert Njoya was shot and killed by Tom Cholmondeley, heir to the Delamere Estate. Cholmondeley encountered Njoya together with some fellow poachers and a pack of dogs, while driving through the countryside of the estate.
This resulted in the trial focusing not so much on the alleged murder, as on the symbolic contrast between a few wealthy white Kenyan landowners and the poor black people for many years, this division has been evident, becoming ever more apparent with the rapid growth of the population leading to a rise in poverty.
This case of severe contrasts raises the question, if the wealthy few should have the right to land when it could provide for many more. Does the era of colonial rule still hold the legitimate authority and power, or ought it to be removed for the greater good?
FOX Africa director, Thandi Davids said "We are really enthusiastic about continually delivering Only in Africa to our audiences, the strand has an important role in our quest for getting African stories told, and more importantly; shared with viewers across the continent."
