IFEX and World Press Freedom Day
By many accounts, 2012 was the most lethal year ever for journalists. On the 20th World Press Freedom Day, UNESCO highlighted the need to create a safe environment for journalists and other media workers.
The IFEX network supports the free expression rights of all, and the media have a special place in this work. They are key allies, helping bring to light attacks on the free expression rights of others, and they are also individuals whose work may put their own lives at risk of threats, attacks or worse from those who would silence them.
Defending press freedom can in turn be dangerous. In the last two weeks, staff at ARTICLE 19 in Mexico and C-Libre in Honduras received death threats. But the commitment of IFEX and its members to media freedom is enduring, and has been since IFEX was created in 1991 - the same year as World Press Freedom Day.
