NEW YORK: The PepsiCo Foundation announced on Tuesday 16 August 2011 that it will contribute US$1 million to famine relief efforts in the Horn of Africa.

"Famine and drought have been called quiet crises, unfolding slowly and hitting society's most vulnerable particularly hard. That's exactly what's happening in the Horn of Africa today, and millions of people need help," said PepsiCo chairman and CEO, Indra Nooyi.

"Help starts with the tireless work being done by humanitarian organisations through the region, which we're eager to support. Their efforts will provide critical water and sanitation services and help alleviate hunger and malnutrition." continues Nooyi.

The contribution will help support the efforts of the International Rescue Committee, the World Food Programme, and Save the Children, three longtime PepsiCo Foundation partners with capabilities to provide relief to affected areas. Specifically, the money will support several identified areas of need, including:

    • US$500 000 to the International Rescue Committee to provide access to safe water and sanitation services in Ethiopia and Kenya
    • US$250 000 to the World Food Programme for food distribution in East Africa
    • US$250 000 to Save the Children to provide nutrient-rich food for malnourished children in Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya
