    AU prepares for Africa Day celebrations

    The African Union (AU) will join the rest of the continent in observing Africa Day today, 25 May 2011. Several activities to mark the day have been organised at the headquarters of the African Union Commission (AUC) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia under the theme, "Accelerating youth empowerment for sustainable development".

    Africa Day at AU headquarters will be celebrated in the presence of the chairperson Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo; president of the Republic of Equatorial; the prime minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh; the chairperson of the African Union Commission, Jean Ping; some African heads of state and government; ministers and other high officials attending the Africa-India Summit which ends on the morning of 25 May.

    Participants will also include the ambassadors of AU member states, partners, heads of international organisations, representatives of civil society organisations, staff members of the AUC and members of the media, amongst others.

    A cultural event will crown the ceremony at the AU headquarters.
