Search on for mystery video artist

There is nothing quite like a mystery to bring out the detective in all of us. This particular one began in December last year when bloggers began to receive mysterious e-mails from "iamamiwhoami".

The curious chose to follow it up and came upon a video viral campaign that, in the words of Alice, got "curiouser and curiouser" as more videos were added to this individual's YouTube channel.

Six short and two fuller-length videos later, the elusive "iamamiwhoami" has this week posted another full-length video, bringing the total to nine. With more than 9 000 subscribers and more than 2 000 000 video upload views, an iTunes app, as well as a great deal of speculation on the web, there is still no clue as to the blogger's true identity.

Nothing official has been published yet on who is behind the campaign. The possible candidates have included Christina Aguilera, Lady Gaga and even Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor (who has publicly denied involvement). However, the most convincing arguments have been made for Swedish solo artist Jonna-Lee and The Knife's Karin Dreijer Andersson. Jonna-Lee's management has said if she is involved they "have no knowledge of such".

The videos themselves are extremely well executed in concept and production and it is evident that they are not lacking in budget. Thought-provoking and unnerving, the ethereal music videos show the gradual emergence of "iamamiwhoami", a blonde woman in a forest and later cabin location, set to an atmospheric electronica soundtrack.

The videos are all symbolic and the first six are complete with nature imagery, pictograms and obscure numeric video titles. The fuller-length video titles ditch the digits in favour of letters.

How this clever campaign might end is anyone's guess. The great identity revelation has little appeal to me, but the unfolding video narrative's magic and meanings do.
