Facebook to launch Gmail killer?
Facebook, rumoured for some time to be planning its own email service, may finally be on the verge of doing so in a move that would send a shot across the bow of Google, Yahoo! and Microsoft. TechCrunch, a leading Silicon Valley technology blog, reported on Friday (12 November 2010) that the social network plans to announce a web-based email service complete with @facebook.com addresses at an event in San Francisco on Monday.

On Saturday the site engaged in some sleuth work, scanning various Facebook domains including mail.facebook.com, to try predict exactly what the social network would be announcing.
"This whole Facebook Mail thing is getting curiouser and curiouser," Techcrunch said on Saturday.
"...here's what everyone really wants to know: are we going to get @facebook.com or @fb.com email addresses? Earlier today, Inside Facebook wondered if fb.com would be used for employees only, and facebook.com would be opened to the public. A report tonight in The New York Times cites two sources also saying that the public will be given facebook.com addresses (that's what we initially heard as well)," says Techcrunch.
