SEACOM undersea cable repairs on track

SEACOM, a provider of submarine fibre-optic cable connecting communication carriers in South and East Africa, on Tuesday (20 July 2010) confirmed that repairs for its faulty undersea cable line between Mumbai and Mombasa were on track for completion by the end of the week, having originally gone down on July 5.

The cable connects South Africa, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda and Mozambique to Europe and Asia.

Initial reports indicated that the overall repair process could take 6-8 days.

"During the course of the past week, SEACOM has continued to work closely with its partners to roll-out the repair work programme and restoration alternatives necessary to maintain adequate connectivity during this process," the group said in its most recent statement.

"The designated ship has been deployed to the location of the fault where it will proceed to locate the cable on the seabed."

SEACOM said that once located, the cable would be picked up before being brought onboard the ship to undergo the necessary repair.

It added that part of the repair process would entail the reconfiguration of the power supply to shut down and isolate the affected portion of the cable. "This will only have a minimal effect on the intra-African services which remained unaffected by this outage.

"Although the repair schedule remains on-track, with a completion date estimated for the later part of next week, a number of exogenous factors including location, water depth, currents and weather make this cable outage very difficult to repair," SEACOM concluded.
