Five-day Cycle Challenge for IT education

Madagascar: Microsoft has donated professionally refurbished PC's to 15 schools in Madagascar. 15 professional field engineers from Microsoft will be cycling 420km across Madagascar to the various schools in order to raise funds to help with the maintenance and operations of the cyber labs.

By completing the challenge they would personally be raising enough money to provide an entire 20-machine computer lab to a school - ultimately providing IT education to 1,000 children who would otherwise be denied this opportunity.

The Cycle Challenge is to take place from 27 September - 5 October 2008.

The premier engineer participating is Bishan Ruder who is originally from Brits, a small town near the Hartebeespoort Dam, in the North West province of South Africa and has never undertaken a challenge of this kind. He has only recently got back on his bike since being a teenager to train for this challenge.

“I like a challenge but think this will be the biggest of my life! This will be a great experience and is for a terrific cause. Supporting this cause has made me realise how those of us in developed nations sometimes take our education and daily use of a computer for granted. I think we can make a big difference to the future of the children we meet,” said Ruder.
