    Virtualization for the African Enterprise

    As virtualization picks up traction across the globe, companies like Sun Microsystems and VMware stand to gain, and Microsoft stands to lose.

    At a recent user group gathering in Uganda, for example, Computer Point Managing Director Anil Kuruvilla told clients that virtualization reduces IT costs, while increasing efficiency - and, unlike Windows-based systems, desktop administration is not required.

    Modern computer software applications are vital for business enterprises and organizations in profit maximization and energy saving, experts have advised.

    The latest computer software applications -- such as Sun Microsystems' (Nasdaq: JAVA) Sun Ray Thin Client and VMware Virtualization -- use low-cost and low-power devices that require no desktop administration, unlike Microsoft Windows.

    Ketan Girdharlal, the Sun Microsystems architect, observed that Sun Ray clients do not need to be upgraded when new applications are introduced or more computing power is required.
