    BBC World Service faces cuts

The UK's foreign secretary, William Hague, confirmed on Thursday (10 September 2010) that the BBC World Service budget would be cut. However, he said that no decisions had been made yet about which country operations would be affected.

The announcement follows a report by newspaper The Guardian in which sources indicated that the BBC's broadcasts to Myanmar were likely to be cut as part of the UK government's spending review.

The Foreign Office has already warned the BBC World Service that its annual direct grant of around US$418 million could be reduced by up to 25% from April 2011, according to The Guardian.
