Africa Convention 2008 honours Thomas Mapfumo
His storied career spans an incredible 36 years during which his "chimurenga" style of music has won over millions of fans and supporters for the struggle. And though very political in nature, Mapfumo's songs have a universal appeal because they speak to human rights causes and because they are musically distinct and often danceable. For his work, beliefs and contributions to the wellness of the Africa peoples, the Africa Convention honours Thomas Mapfumo with the Icon of Africa Award.
The four-day event will feature the best and the brightest of the African continent and culminate in a royal banquet ceremony. Among the highlights of the event will be the Pan-Africa Women's Empowerment and Economic Development Symposium, African Film Festival, African-North American Couture Show and International Business Exhibition.
